Lakeside Chapel Receives Philanthropic Support

When part of the Lakeside Chapel platform was compromised this spring, Laura and The Rev. Tommy Townsend came to the rescue with a gift to fully restore the chapel where so many have been married, engaged, and had annual family portraits taken.
“Over time, the joists had pulled away from the ledger board, allowing the deck to slip roughly two feet,” said Property Director Glenn Griffith. “The partial collapse caused enough damage that it was not financially viable or effective to repair the existing deck. The full deck was replaced with a Trex deck surface and powder-coated wire panels for longevity. Screws and joist hangers were used, as well and several supports to increase the strength of the deck,” he said.
This summer, the Townsends gathered with Kanuga staff to enjoy the new decking made possible by their gift, made in loving memory of Rannie Sparkman Townsend and in honor of their children. A plaque was installed on the railing to commemorate the gift.
“With the Lakeside Chapel in need of repairs, we were blessed that Laura and Tommy happened to be visiting Kanuga this spring. They noticed the need for repairs, and quickly stepped up with a timely gift to ensure the Chapel would be ready for the busy summer season,” said Michael Sullivan at the re-opening ceremony. Thank you, Townsends!
