Leadership Academy

A ministry forming the next generation of mentors

Designed for rising 11th and 12th graders, Leadership Academy helps teens develop confidence and critical leadership skills that are beneficial as they enter adulthood, whether they are preparing for college, becoming a Camp Kanuga counselor or developing lifelong skills for any environment in which they choose to serve.

The first week is comprised of leadership development and training, including an adventure weekend of camping, zip lining and tubing. Participants serve the final week as camp counselors at a regional Camp Kanuga Local Day Camp.

Program Overview

The Leadership Academy’s exciting programming empowers campers with the skills they need to become Counselors-in-Training (CITs).

Week 1: Leadership Development
During week one, CITs are trained just like Camp Kanuga counselors and support staff in communication and presentation skills, care of campers, program design/facilitation and risk management. Individuals complete a strengths analysis and personality profile, learning about themselves and gaining an understanding of others. As they are exposed to different styles and methods, CITs discover leadership is not only compatible with, but integral to, Christian life.

Adventure Weekend(s)
CITs are in for special adventures and relationship building on the weekends in between training and counseling an actual day camp. The first weekend the teens spend time camping, soaring on a zip line and tubing on the French Broad River. Participants that choose to stay for the third week experience beach activities including sea kayaking, sailing, swimming, snorkeling and fishing.

Weeks 2 & 3: On-the-Job Training
During weeks two and three, participants transition from camper to day camp counselor. Applying the skills and techniques acquired during training, CITs gain real world experience facilitating high-quality programming for elementary-aged campers at a local church. Participants and Camp Kanuga Local Day Camp staff stay in the evenings, cooking and sleeping at the church while they continue their training. Each night the team debriefs to discuss their experiences in order to integrate training, practices and leadership skills into their daily lives.
