Prayerful meditation & the ancient technique of creating icons


November 14 – 20, 2020

Join renowned instructor Teresa Harrison for a course in the ancient technique of icon writing. This process inspires prayerful meditation, both while creating the art and reflecting on the finished piece. This six-day retreat includes Eucharist, chant, prayer, silence and lively conversation, free time and social hours. Icons will be written in acrylic paint and gold leaf, a medium which resembles traditional egg tempera. Beginners and experienced iconographers will find this course rewarding.

About the Instructor

Teresa Harrison - Icon Writing RetreatTeresa Harrison of Jacksonville, FL, returns for her fifteenth year of teaching icon writing at Kanuga. She is a lifelong Episcopalian who has studied with master iconographers Phillip Zimmerman and Ksenia Pokrovsky. Her work has been published in The Living Church and Anglican Episcopal World. In addition to Kanuga, she has taught at churches and retreat centers in CA, SC, TN, IL, FL, NY, PA, TX and Cuba.

Lodging Options:
  • Double occupancy (Shared Bedroom): $1245

  • Commuter (Non-Resident): $815
    • No lodging on Kanuga property.  The commuter rate includes a facility day-use fee and lunch. Additional meals available at the reception desk during your stay.
  • Non participating Guest (Double occupancy – Shared bedroom): $855
Payment and Cancellations:

A deposit of $100.00 is required at the time of registration. We accept VISA, MasterCard, Discover, American Express and Echeck.


Cancellations and refunds are provided in a tiered system based on proximity to the event start date. Any cancellation made at least three weeks before the event start date will result in the forfeiture of the $100.00 deposit and a refund of any remaining balance.  Cancellations made 20-15 days before the event start date will result in the forfeiture of the $100.00 deposit and receive a 50% refund of any remaining balance. Cancellations made 14-8 days before the event start date will result in the forfeiture of the $100.00 deposit.  You will then receive a 25% refund of any remaining balance. Cancellations made within 7 days of the event start date are not eligible for a refund.

In the event of a cancellation, notice must be sent to Kanuga in writing either via fax (828) 696-3589 or via email.


Check-in is at 4 p.m. Check-Out is at 10 a.m.
