Dam Reconstruction FAQs

Why is the lake level lower than normal?

Following Hurricane Helene, the State of North Carolina conducted inspections of private earthen dams throughout the state. What began as a project to replace the lake’s main valve ultimately became a state-mandated reconstruction of key dam infrastructure, including a totally replaced new main concrete spillway and valve, major enhancements to the existing earthen spillway and stilling basin, and adding a concrete culvert auxiliary spillway. Our appeal to begin construction in the fall was denied and the draw down required immediately. Lowering the lake is necessary to safely complete this work and ensure the long-term future of the lake and surrounding watershed.

When will the lake return to normal levels?

Final valve work is underway and the lake will refill naturally. The return of the water will depend largely on the gifts of rain and time. If conditions cooperate, we anticipate reopening the waterfront in late June.

Can I still use the beach area?

Yes. The beach area remains open and is a wonderful place to relax, play, enjoy the scenery, and gather with family and friends.

Will waterfront activities still be available?

Specific activities may be adjusted based on water levels and conditions, but our waterfront remains an active part of the guest experience.

Can I swim in the lake?

Swimming opportunities may be modified due to current lake conditions. Our staff will provide guidance on available waterfront activities during your stay.

Are the hiking trails open?

Absolutely. Kanuga’s extensive trail network remains open and offers some of the best ways to experience the beauty of the property, including forests, streams, mountain views, and peaceful places for reflections. Updated trail maps are available at check-in showing the dam section which is closed.

Should I still visit Kanuga this summer?

Absolutely. The lake will be back to normal soon, but in the meantime, guests will find the same spirit of hospitality, renewal, recreation, and connection that has always been at the heart of Kanuga. Over the last few months, many guests have discovered that even with a different lakescape, the things they love most about Kanuga remain unchanged. Community, worship, trails, porches, campfires, and meaningful time together continue to define the experience.
