KNITTING PROJECTS
(Click on project name to view photo)
  • One-Piece Vest — This versatile pattern has only shoulder seams and can be adapted to a number of stitch patterns. Knitted flat with worsted weight yarn, it is quick to knit and easy to make your own. It is a good project for a beginning as well as a more experienced knitter. Techniques include fully fashioned decreases and increases and stitch substitution ideas.
  • Möbius Scarf — Here’s a new take on that möbius ring you made in school. This knitted version makes a beautiful cowl or hood and is adaptable to a number of stitch patterns. Eyelet edging can also be added for additional elegance. Techniques include möbius cast on, eyelet edging and I-cord edge.
  • Fair Isle Hat — If you are interested in colorwork but don’t want to be committed to a full sweater, this is a perfect project to get your feet wet. Knitted in the round with various shades of DK weight yarn, this hat can be longer or shortened to a cap. Techniques include two-color knitting and knitting-in-the-round on two circulars or double-pointed needles.
  • Mosaic Scarf — Using a slip stitch, we will each create our own scarf with mosaic pattern techniques. Bring as many colors as you want. You will have an opportunity to chart your own designs or work with the pattern provided. Techniques include pattern charting and slip stitch.
  • Bring Your Own — If you need some dedicated time to finish a project, bring it to the retreat and join others by the fire with needles and yarn. Instructors will be available to help if you run into a problem and everyone will be available to admire your work.

Now in its fifth year, the Kanuga Knitting and Quilting Retreat provides a unique opportunity for knitters and quilters of all ages to be creative, unwind and reflect in Kanuga’s peaceful mountain setting.

"Both knitters and quilters belong to a rich heritage of tapping into that creative side of ourselves to turn something made by necessity into something so very expressive of the Creator," said Varian Brandon, who has coordinated the retreat since inception.

Knitters will choose one project (see list at right) to work on and complete during this long weekend. Projects will be offered for beginning to advanced knitters.

Fast Quilt from Fat Quarters

For beginning to intermediate quilters, internationally known quilt artist Jean Ann Wright will lead a workshop on making a fast quilt from fat quarters. The design will use variations of the Ohio Star.

In addition to daily classes, there will be Relax and Stitch get-togethers and time for hiking to scenic mountain overlooks and visiting area yarn and quilting shops.
