Solo Flight XVIII

Flying Solo: Creating Communities
of Ones
Aug. 29 - Sept. 1, 2008

Living in a couple-oriented church and society often finds single adults struggling with exactly what this period of life is about, whether flying solo as young adults, in mid-life or as older adults, and whether your "season of singleness" is as a never married, divorced or widowed person.

Single adults of all ages are interested in the development of a community of people who share experiences and values. From the beginning, this has been a goal of Solo Flight.

The 2008 conference will address the personal and spiritual challenges and opportunities of building "communities of ones," as well as sharing ideas of how to go about it, both individually and in our churches.

The conference includes presentations, workshops, evening fun and daily morning and evening worship in the Episcopal tradition. One highlight will be the Liturgy of Healing and Wholeness and Blessing of Singularity. Solo Flight annually offers this opportunity for single adults to experience liturgy that is of and about their lives.

About the keynoter

Daniel Ludwik

Daniel Ludwik

Brother Daniel Ludwik, OHC, is a monk with the Order of the Holy Cross at Mariya uMama weThemba, an Anglican Benedictine monastery in Grahamstown, South Africa.

A native of Namibia, he grew up in the Dutch Reformed Church but broke with it at age 19 due to political and theological differences. When he later returned to organized religion, he joined the Anglican Church. He was called to Holy Cross Monastery in 2005.

"Those years away from the church have been extremely productive in terms of spiritual formation," he says. "Living through the Border War of South Africa in Namibia and through the most recent civil war in the Republic of the Congo had a profound impact on the way that I see the world and experience life. I am particularly blessed in the way that these and other experiences are factoring into my monastic journey."

WHAT IS SOLO FLIGHT?
Solo Flight is an intergenerational conference for single adults that offers opportunities for spiritual growth, learning, fellowship and networking with those who share similar values. The conference has its home base at Kanuga and is staffed by professionals who know the single experience first hand and are themselves on a spiritual journey.

This annual event offers institutional support, guidelines and guided participation in making maps in the world of singleness, as well as rituals and traditions for the journey, all based in the Eucharist celebration and the belief that the only relationship that will not fail is the relationship with Jesus Christ.

This year's artists are Jennifer Mizenko, a professor of dance at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, and Cathy McGlasson, who teaches violin, viola and piano for Suzuki Talent Education of Appalachia in Kingsport, Tenn.
