Latino/Hispanic Ministries
Sharing the Walk
Nov. 9-12, 2008

"Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God."
– Ephesians 5:2
- What Can I Expect?
-
- To learn ways to become involved in Latino ministry even if you don't speak Spanish
- To meet others with your interest and begin a network
- To learn from others and to share what you know in meetings and informally
- Encouragement for developing and sustaining Latino ministry in your own parish
- To explore how global connections foster and enhance local ministries and vice versa
- Discussion groups on topics that may arise, such as the impact of legislation, community relations and local issues
Breaking bread together, sharing lives, being vulnerable, walking and growing together in love and service — all of this is the essence of evangelism.
But for evangelism within the Latino/Hispanic community, this walk presents unique challenges, from limited resources that often leave people feeling alone in their ministry to language barriers that can intimidate potential volunteers.
In its fourth year, Kanuga’s biennial Latino/Hispanic Ministries Conference will offer practical tools and a network of support to better equip for ministry those working within the Latino/Hispanic community and those who want to be.
Discussions will focus on worship and liturgy, social services (especially immigration and healthcare) and the importance of making connections locally, nationally and internationally.
About the keynoters
The Rt. Rev. Julio Cesar Holguin has served as bishop of the Dominican Republic since 1991. Since his consecration, the diocese has experienced impressive growth, more than doubling its number of missions, temples, clergy and Episcopal schools. The diocese also has committed to serving the region's poor through children shelters, medical clinics and a micro-business loan program. Since 2003, the diocese has been working to establish 25 new churches, open a home for impoverished senior citizens, recruit and develop 25 additional priests and significantly increase clergy salaries — all by 2012.
Anthony Guillén
The Rev. Canon Anthony Guillén has served as canon missioner for the Episcopal Church’s office of Latino/Hispanic Ministries since 2005. Previously, he served as rector of All Saints Church in Oxnard, Calif., a vibrant bilingual/bicultural parish in the Diocese of Los Angeles, and was a missionary in the Diocese of Western Mexico, where he established two missions and worked as diocesan youth coordinator. He has served a six-year term on the Executive Council and created Leccionario Dominical, Spanish lectionary sheets for church-wide use.
