In its third year, Kanuga's Garden Conference returns with new opportunities to learn about the spiritual dimensions of gardening and takes a fresh look at new topics, such as engaging children in the garden.

Keynoters Sharon Lovejoy and Julie Moir Messervy join a host of experts on gardening and spirituality to offer educational and inspirational teaching sessions and workshops.

For gardeners or anyone interested in spiritual growth, a wide variety of workshops will be offered.

A trip to the North Carolina Arboretum plus a chance to get your hands dirty with the installation of the Monarch Waystation Butterfly Garden at Kanuga.

  • Lettuce Grow Veggies and Community with Victoria Register-Freeman, an innkeeper in Jacksonville, Fla., whose urban organic mini-farming techniques were featured in Southern Living magazine
  • Let Your Garden Be in Peak Season Year-Round with photographer Robin Smith of Columbia, S.C., who will share digital photography basics and helpful hints on how and when to photograph your garden for best results
  • Where There’s a Will, There’s a Waystation, an opportunity to learn how to create and preserve butterfly habitats with naturalist and Monarch butterfly expert Ina Warren of Brevard, N.C.
  • Tips for creating your own "inward" or contemplative garden, led by Julie Moir Messervy

About the keynoters

Sharon Lovejoy

Sharon Lovejoy

Sharon Lovejoy is a recognized gardening expert, naturalist, watercolor illustrator and award-winning garden and nature writer. She was a contributing editor to Country Living Gardener magazine for 13 years and has written seven books, including Sunflower Houses: Inspiration from the Garden - A Book for Children and Their Grown Ups; A Blessing of Toads: A Gardener's Guide to Living with Nature; and Trowel and Error: Over 700 Shortcuts, Tips and Remedies for the Gardener.

Sharon's home, business and display gardens first captured national attention on the cover of the August 1990 issue of Country Living magazine. Since then, her creations have appeared in numerous books and magazines, and she has been a guest on countless radio and TV shows from coast to coast. She resides in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and South Bristol, Maine.

Julie Moir Messervy

Julie Moir Messervy

Julie Moir Messervy is an award-winning author and landscape designer who has spent more than 30 years inspiring professionals and homeowners to create gardens that connect heart, home and landscape. Renowned for her work with Yo-Yo Ma and the City of Toronto to create the Toronto Music Garden in 1999, her design work and books have been featured in The New York Times, Washington Post, House & Garden, Elle Décor and other publications.

She is a regular contributor to Fine Gardening magazine and has written four books, including The Inward Garden and Outside the Not So Big House. Her forthcoming book, The Home Outside, will be available in 2009. She is the principal of Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio in Saxtons River, Vt.
