In sessions for large and small groups, this week will provide tools and inspiration for discipleship and evangelism.
- Tell Me Something Good — The conference design team wants to hear what has happened in your church since T&R IV in 2005. How did the conference affect your church’s ministry, or not? If you did not attend T&R IV, the team welcomes your comments as we learn from each other in this reporting session.
- Highlights and the State of the Black Church — Led by the Rev. Canon Angela Ifill, missioner for Black Ministries at Episcopal Church Center in New York. Previously she was associate rector at St. Paul’s in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and canon pastor at Trinity and St. Philip’s Cathedral in Newark, N.J.
- Evangelism and Congregational Development — Led by Angela Ifill.
- Radical Welcome — Led by the Rev. Stephanie Spellers, minister for radical welcome at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston. Her book Radical Welcome: Embracing God, The Other, and the Spirit of Transformation is based on over 200 interviews. She is a member of the Episcopal Church's Commission on Domestic Mission and Evangelism.
- Liturgical Evangelism — Led by the Rev. Martini Shaw, rector of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas in Philadelphia, the first black Episcopal church in the country. From 1990-2003, he was rector of St. Thomas Church in Chicago.
- Stewardship and Evangelism — Led by Anne Ditzler, special projects manager of the Episcopal Church Foundation in New York. The ECF is an independent organization that seeks to strengthen the leadership and financial capabilities of congregations, dioceses and related organizations to pursue their mission and ministry.
- Music workshops not just for musicians will be led by Carl MaultsBy. Topics include "So Your Church Can’t Find An Organist: Reviving a cappella worship and other solutions," "Clergy/Musician Relations" and "The Mass: A Mini-Review Course."
- Evangelism with Young Adults — Led by the Rev. Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Syracuse, N.Y., and Episcopal chaplain at Syracuse University.
- Let’s Get Moving — In the final presentation of the week, participants will translate what they have learned into plans for action back home. The Rev. Vincent Harris of St. George’s in Washington, D.C., will moderate this discussion.
This biennial conference is a national resource for strengthening historically black congregations in the Episcopal Church.
This year’s gathering will prepare participants to throw open their church doors and do the holy work of evangelism, which brings new faces to those doors.
Presentations will examine the importance of evangelism and each individual’s responsibility for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ through various types of encounters.
The Rev. Dr. Susan Newman from The Balm in Gilead will give the opening address. Another plenary session, "Evangelism 101," will be led by the Rev. Dr. Benjamin K. Watts, director of Hartford Seminary's Black Ministries Program.
Participants come from many parts of the country to share knowledge, make friends, build networks and celebrate their Episcopal faith.
From its beginning in 1999, this national gathering has been co-sponsored by Kanuga, the Episcopal Church Office of Black Ministries and the Union of Black Episcopalians.
