The second half of life is a time to wake up to what has been true all along — life with all of its ups and downs is a sheer gift.
In today's society, we often resist the need for downtime and give in to thinking we should be relentlessly upbeat and cheerful all the time. But there are lessons to appreciate and opportunities for gratitude even amid the wintry realities of life: suffering, tragedy and disappointment.
Take time to explore your purpose amid the natural cycles of life and you just might find yourself surprised by joy.
During this retreat time together, we will explore four topics:
The Very Rev. Dr. Alan Jones was the dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco from 1985 until 2009. Previously, he served as the Stephen F. Bayne Professor of Ascetical Theology and director and founder of the Center for Christian Spirituality at General Theological Seminary in New York.
A major Christian thinker and writer, he is the author of many books on spirituality, including Reimagining Christianity, Seasons of Grace and Soul-Making: The Desert Way of Spirituality. Now a U.S. citizen, he was born in England and received his Ph.D. from the University of Nottingham. A prominent lecturer in Episcopalian and academic circles both nationally and internationally, he also was the moderator of The Forum at Grace Cathedral, an Internet broadcast talk program.
CHAPLAIN: The Rev. Jane Sigloh is a teacher, preacher and story keeper from Charlottesville, Va. Ordained in 1988, she served parishes in Connecticut and Virginia until her retirement in 1998. An English teacher before answering the call to the priesthood, she holds an undergraduate degree from Sweet Briar College, a master's degree in English and creative writing from Hollins University and a master's in divinity from Yale Divinity School. Her recently published book, Like Trees Walking, is about the journey into the second half of life.

COORDINATOR: The Rev. Dr. Joe Bowden is a retired doctor who volunteers as the part-time assisting priest at Church of the Holy Comforter in Martinez, Ga. Previously, he served as a professor of surgery at the Medical College of Georgia and chief of general surgery at the Augusta Veterans Administration Hospital. He has been editor-in-chief of the surgical journal, The American Surgeon, for 15 years. He earned his M.Div. from the University of the South and was ordained in 2002.
The Bowen Conference was created through the generosity of Buford Bowen as an annual conference to explore Christian commitment. Since it began in 1989, the Bowen Conference has grown into one of Kanuga's premier conferences. Past keynoters include Bruce Feiler, Jon Meacham, Barbara Brown Taylor, Frank Griswold, N. T. Wright, Andrew Greeley and Frederick Buechner, as well as Terry Waite, Henri Nouwen and Robert Bellah.
