A Quick Note

I haven't posted a new blog in a few days so I thought I'd give everyone a quick State of the Camp address.

It is really getting exciting and busy around here. They are still working on the construction projects at Toad Hall, the Chalet, OLS, Bob's Cabin, and the new cabin on the boy's side. Most of them just got a coat of paint so we'll be done soon.

Mina, our Program Director, and Emily, our Head Female Counselor, just got here and they are jumping straight in to camp preparation. We are buying new supplies for the waterfront, getting shirts for tye-dye, putting the camp schedule together and even starting to figure out which cabins you (guys and girls) are going to be in.

Camp is getting warmer and brighter every day. Mina noticed some nice flowers blooming by the camp office and by Lake McCready. All of the trees are full of leaves now and the sun is peaking through more and more often. Kanuga's housekeeping staff are cleaning up the cabins in preparation for the Session I campers.

I could not be more excited about the coming weeks. Campers come June 3 and we have a lot to do before then. Our counselors show up May 25 and they are going to be working hard to be the GREATEST COUNSELORS YOU EVER HAD.

75 years with the best summer coming soon...I promise!!!

An Update on Construction at Camp

A History Lesson

I visited Boston this weekend. While there, I visited Old North Church, the church that Paul Revere made his famous midnight ride from on April 18, 1775. He was sent on this ride to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams that the British were coming. He lit a single lantern in the steeple of Old North Church, which meant the British were coming by land. After lighting this lantern, he started on his midnight ride warning the residents on the road to Lexington by yelling, "The British are coming!"

Did you know that this church (also called Christ Church) is an Episcopal church? Why is this significant? Camp Kanuga is an Episcopal camp. Kinda cool, huh?

Aubrey Comes Back

Aubrey Winship, one of our wonderful Junior Counselors from last year, has signed on to come back to be a counselor this summer.

You'll probably notice Aubrey is wearing a Georigia Tech shirt. She is headed to Georgia Tech this fall to study Architecture and is graduating from Episcopal High School in Jacksonville, Fla., in just a few short weeks.

"Camp Kanuga means more to me than I could put into words," Aubrey said. "It is what we call the Kanuga Spirit; you cannot explain it, you just know."

I am so excited to have Aubrey back. Help me to welcome her to the staff of 2006.

Christine Introduces Herself

Hey everyone!

First off, I can’t begin to express how excited I am to be spending my summer as a counselor at Camp Kanuga. I have been a program aide at a Girl Scout camp for several years, and I love working with youth. Two of my passions are camping and the outdoors, so I am always looking for a new adventure.

I live in Pennsylvania and go to school at Gettysburg College, where I am studying environmental science and Spanish. I also am on the track and field team, and in my free time I love to cook and hike around the battlefields of Gettysburg. I can’t wait to meet everyone and help you all have an awesome experience at Kanuga!

See you soon – Christine
