Announcing Shannon Fyfe

I am so pleased to announce Shannon Fyfe will be a Camp Kanuga counselor this summer. She is a junior at UNC-Chapel Hill where she is double majoring in Political Science and Music. She has focused her musical talents into vocal performance and we hope she will help our music leaders this summer.

She is a former Camp Kanuga camper and is thrilled to now be able to teach the same activities she remembers as a camper. She has worked at Arts Together, an arts camp in Raleigh, N.C. She also volunteers at the Durham Youth Home and Orange County Crisis Center. She is considering a future in ministry and hopes to attend divinity school after college.

"During my spiritual journey as a Christian, I have come to believe that relationships are the most important way to share Christ's love," Shannon said.

She is so excited to be able to spend the summer at Camp Kanuga and looks forward to an unforgettable experience getting to know all of you!

Hannah Sharpe Joins the Staff

Hi!
My name is Hannah Sharpe and I'm from Summerfield, N.C. I am a student at UNC-Chapel Hill and plan on majoring in Journalism and Political Science. I have a lot of interests, but if I had to narrow things down, I would say that I am most interested in music, art (photography) and Duke basketball. (Yes, I know, I'm a "Tar Heel," but I've been a Duke fan my entire life!)

All my friends would say that I am obsessed with music and it's true – it is a big part of my life. I appreciate a lot of different genres, but my favorite kind of music is rock – emo, punk, etc., that's all me! Art is also important to me. I've been doing art all my life and in more recent years, I have become really interested in photography. My dream job is to be a photojournalist for National Geographic.

I'm very excited to be joining the Camp Kanuga staff this summer. Being a camp counselor is going to be an experience that I will never forget. I can't wait to meet everyone, especially the kids. I'm sure that I'm going to learn just as much from them as I hope they will from me!

I just know that we are going to have a great time this summer!
-Hannah

Please Welcome Drew Byrd

Hello! My name is Drew Byrd. I am a freshman at North Carolina State University double majoring in Business Management and Economics. I don't really know what I want to do after I graduate, but I still have plenty of time to think about it.

At NCSU I am actively involved in Campus Crusade for Christ and Student Wolfpack Club. I also enjoy being outdoors, swimming and playing most any sports. I am really excited about the opportunity of being a counselor at Camp Kanuga. This has been something I have wanted to try and I know it will be fun from what I have heard.

See ya soon,
Drew

Please Welcome Elizabeth Harlow

Hi! My name is Elizabeth Harlow. I’m a sophomore attending Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga. I’m majoring in early childhood education and plan on becoming a teacher and eventually an elementary school counselor. I’m very involved in my university's Baptist Student Union and also a part of a wonderful sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. I have a passion for children, singing and of course our wonderful Jesus Christ. I have always wanted to be a camp counselor and I’m really blessed that God gave me the opportunity to become one this summer. I’m so excited about teaching kids and I know that they will in return teach me so many new things as well. I’m praying everyday and continuously counting down the days until camp begins.

See you this summer,

Jacob Higgie Joins the CK Family

Let me introduce all of you to Jacob, who joins us from New Zealand. He will be working this summer as a camp counselor and I couldn’t be more excited to have him onboard.

He is a seasoned worship leader and is excited at the thought of being at Camp Kanuga this summer. In high school, Jacob was a member of his school’s elite choir, OK Chorale. They even won the gold award in a national competition in 2005. He has been playing guitar for four years now, working his way up to worship leader at All Saints Anglican Church in New Zealand. He also is an avid hockey player and has captained two teams.

Working at Camp Kanuga will be a great opportunity for him to continue working with children and he will be a great asset to this year’s staff.

“I feel that this is a chance for me to share my knowledge and skills with the kids, whilst making friends and being a role model.”

A New Counselor - Katie Wright

Hey everyone! My name is Katie Wright and I am so excited about being a camp counselor this summer at Camp Kanuga. I'm from Reidsville, N.C., and I go to school at UNC-Charlotte. My major is Elementary Education, so I definitely love being around children!

I grew up on a dairy farm and I love the outdoors. One of my favorite things in life to do is to surround myself in the beautiful world God created. Other hobbies of mine are playing the piano, baking, taking pictures and getting to know new people.

I know this summer at Camp Kanuga is going to be amazing and I can’t wait!

Sincerely,
Katie

A Note from Jane

Hey Y'all!
I’m Jane Werrell and I’m so thrilled to be coming back to Camp Kanuga this year as a counselor! You might recognize me because I was a Junior Counselor last year and am pictured in the camp brochure. I have been coming to Kanuga with my family since I was four and it holds a very special place in my heart. I even wrote my senior speech on the lessons I learned last summer from being on the staff! I appreciate every minute I spend at Camp Kanuga and I am so grateful for all the relationships I’ve built in this special close knit community. I am positive this summer will be one of the best Camp Kanuga has ever experienced and I’m overjoyed to be a part of it! Best wishes and hope to see you all this summer!

Sincerely,
Jane

Two New Board Members

Last weekend, Kanuga held its bi-annual Board of Directors meeting. We welcomed two new members to the Camp Kanuga family.

Jan Delosier joins the Camping Committee from Nashville, Tenn. Jan and her family have been so important to the success of the Trailblazer Adventure program over the last 10+ years. Jan already has been helpful and has great ideas about how we can improve an already great program.

The Rev. Sally Johnston joins the Camp Kanuga family from Charlotte, N.C., where she is the Assistant Rector at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church. Maybe we can get her to come to camp to lead our Chapel service this summer.

Upon meeting these two outstanding women, I hope you campers will say thank you for all of the hardwork they will be putting in to support Camp Kanuga.

Welcome to the family!

Ten Years and Counting for Emily Boone

I am so excited to announce that Emily Boone will be next summer’s Head Female Counselor. The attention and effort she put into her work earned her the Outstanding Female Counselor award last summer. We are so excited to welcome her back for her 10th year.

Emily currently is spending a semester abroad in France and is learning the language quickly. She is a sophomore at Davidson College and is studying art history.

Emily will be giving her attention to the Junior Counselor program this summer. Her experience as a counselor and a junior counselor has prepared her well to be able to teach our JCs how to be great camp counselors.

She is excited about next summer and cannot wait to see all of you again.
