Head Counselor
We are currently seeking a Head Male Counselor AND a Head Female Counselor for a contract period of 11 weeks for May 20 - Aug. 3, 2007.
Desired Qualifications
- Previous camp staff experience
- Completion of two years of college and at least 21 years of age
- Desire and ability to work with a diverse population of campers and adults in a camp setting
- Desire and ability to supervise staff and campers
- Ability to creatively lead and assist with programs, facilities and staff
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Strong risk management and safety awareness
Essential Functions
- Ability to train staff in their responsibilities
- Ability to work as part of a team to accomplish the camp’s goals
- Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to hazards.
- Physical strength and endurance to provide constant supervision of staff and programs in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to communicate verbally with and provide necessary instruction to children ages 8-18 with a variety of skill levels

General Responsibilities
Train staff in their responsibilities, supervise staff and programs and counsel staff and campers
Specific Responsibilities
- Prior to camp, contact staff you are assigned to supervise
- During staff training, teach staff their responsibilities
- Assign campers to cabins, activity groups and elective groups
- Be responsible for the welfare of each person in the unit
- Help each participant in the unit meet the goals established by Camp Bob for camper development
- Visit cabins regularly during the day as a supervisory tool, but also to provide an opportunity to get to know the campers and the staff
- Assist campers and staff who need help fitting into the camp environment
- Provide appropriate counseling and discipline for difficult campers
- Document disciplinary problems and actions taken to solve the problems
- As appropriate, speak with campers’ parents
- Conduct inspection of cabins and camp facilities
- Monitor counselor and camper assignments for the day
- In the event a counselor is ill or their employment is terminated, lead activities or supervise cabins as necessary
- Together with the rest of the administrative team, plan and execute evening programs
- Check with and excuse counselors for off duty time
- Mentor, encourage and support cabin counselors
- Recognize and reward staff for individual and team achievements
- Correct or reprimand staff for actions that put the health and safety of a camper at risk
- Inform the director of any camper or staff problems
- Formally evaluate unit staff at least twice a season, conducting other evaluations as necessary
- Assist in evaluating the entire camp operation with suggestions for the following season
- Provide first aid treatment to the level of training
- Uphold camp policies and procedures
- Be a positive Christian role model
- Other duties will be assigned as necessary
Salary and Benefits
- $250/week (more depending on experience)
- Room and board
- Pre-camp training
- 10 percent bonus upon completion of contract
