Kanuga Trailblazers

Kanuga Trailblazers has an important two-part mission: to develop leadership skills in teenagers and to introduce them to the wonders of the natural world.

Campers ages 15-17 can choose the traditional Appalachian Trail Hiking Adventure or the Pack and Paddle adventure. Both adventures begin with three days at Meg’s Outpost, a base camp where Trailblazers build their community and learn skills necessary for trail life.

On the traditional adventure, Trailblazers spend nine days in the Cherokee and Pisgah National Forests, with eight of those days backpacking along 44 miles of the Appalachian Trail and the final day for whitewater rafting on the Class III-IV Nolichucky River.

Pack and Paddle features four days of backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, four days of flat-water canoeing on the New River and a day of whitewater rafting.

All sessions operate under a special use permit with the U.S. Forest Service.

Trailblazers return to Meg’s Outpost and complete a service project for their final day on either adventure.

Traditional sessions are limited to 16 participants, with Pack and Paddle limited to eight per session.
