Summer Staff
Christian Formation
The Christian Formation area focuses on providing quality Christian education for children of conferees and guests and is divided into four departments:
Youth Ministry
- Youth Chaplain
(College Graduate or Seminarian - Responsibilities include being an integral part of the Children’s, Youth and Kanuga Outdoors Programs; working with the young people who attend conferences, guest periods and camps; assist the chaplains of Camp Kanuga and Camp Bob; plan and implement staff worship, spiritual activities and music; and lead discussions providing opportunities for staff to grow in their faith. Also, the Youth Chaplain will set up service projects for Kanuga Outdoors in the Henderson County area, such as helping build a house with Habitat for Humanity. Depending on the applicant's skills, you might be assigned duties in another department. Interns welcome.
Nursery
(Children under 3 years)
- Director
(Minimum age 21) - July & August only. The director will supervise/train a staff of at least three assistants; prepare a safe environment for infants and toddlers; keep the nursery clean and well stocked with the necessary supplies; and look after the well being of the children. Because this is a morning position, applicants will be assigned to other departments during the afternoons.
- Assistants
(Minimum age 17) - July & August only. A staff of three will provide childcare during Summer Guest Period. Responsibilities include setting up the nursery, keeping the supplies clean, check in and check out the children, and looking after the well being of these children. Because this is a morning position, applicants will be assigned to other departments during the afternoons.
Children's Program
(ages 3-8)
- Director
(Minimum age 21) - The Director will supervise/train a staff of at least eight counselors, manage/budget a Children’s Program fund and plan/implement the Children’s Program curriculum. Master of Religious Education or a four-year degree in Preschool or Elementary Education preferred.
- Assistant Director
(Minimum age 20) - The Assistant Director will assist the Children’s Program Director in all aspects of the program. Elementary Education majors are encouraged to apply.
- Counselors
(Minimum age 17) - Counselors assist in providing a quality program for children, which includes keeping the Children's Program building and grounds neat and clean. Staff will be in charge of specific age groups and should exhibit characteristics which include patience, responsibility and flexibility. Elementary Education majors are encouraged to apply.
Youth Program
(ages 9-12)
- Director
(Minimum age 21) - The director will develop and direct programs for the young guests. The program will operate with emphasis on team building, group dynamics and exploration of our natural world through day hikes. Experience in rock climbing/ropes course skills will enhance applications. Master of Religious Education and Elementary or Secondary Education majors are encouraged to apply.
- Counselors
(Minimum age 17) - Counselors assist in providing a quality program for youth. They will assist the director in running the program, serve as responsible/positive role models for the youth, promote Christian values and lead the youth in certain activities. Experience with teaching Christian education, arts and crafts, rock climbing/ropes course skills will enhance applications.
Kanuga Outdoors
(ages 13-18)
- Director
(Minimum age 21) - The director will develop and direct programs for teenagers. The program will stress the importance of team building, group dynamics and Christian values. The director needs to be a responsible leader and positive role model and should be creative when planning the program, which include off property trips and hikes. Also, the Kanuga Outdoors staff assists adults at the climbing tower and ropes course. Experience in ropes courses, rock climbing and high adventure activities will enhance applications.
- Counselors
(College Students) - Counselors assist the director in developing and executing a quality program for teenagers. Experience with rock climbing, team building and promoting Christian ideals are important. Also, being a positive role model is a must for this position.
Arts and Crafts
(ages 3-18)
- Art and Crafts Director
(College Student) - Organize and lead arts and crafts program for the Children’s, Youth and Kanuga Outdoors programs (ages 3-18). Includes leading activities such as tie-dying, painting, candle making, etc. Also, the director is expected to help in the general program for the children. Experience in arts and crafts a must. Elementary Education or Art majors are encouraged to apply.
